Born in Winnipeg, Canada, he graduated with a Gold Medal in Music from the University of Manitoba, where he studied the double bass with Stanley Label, conducting with Henry Engbrecht, and bass viol with Richard Burleson. Attracted to the historically-informed performance movement as a means of reconciling his two passions, music and history, in 1989 he cofounded the province's first period-instrument ensemble, MusikBarock.
In 1991 he declined the offer of a contract with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in order to study in Paris with the double bassists François Rabbath and Richard Myron, and the conductor Jean-Jacques Werner. He soon became a regular performer with the pioneering French ensembles Les Arts Florissants and La Grande Ecurie & La Chambre du Roy. He has also performed with Le Concert Spirituel, Concerto Köln, l'Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, Il Seminario Musicale, and the Ensemble Baroque de Limoges. He began conducting in 2004 when the prestigious Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et Danse de Paris invited him to direct a conference-concert wherein he presented excerpts of French baroque operas that had not been heard in nearly three hundred years. In 2007 he founded the ensemble “Les Enfants d’Apollon” to present concerts of original and unusual music, inspired by his research.
Professor at the Conservatoire of Villepinte, France, Dr Greenberg possesses Master and Doctor of Music History degrees from the Université de Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV). He has contributed articles to the "Journal of the American Musical Instrument Society", "The Online Journal of Bass Research", "Musique-Images-Instruments", "Bass World", and "La Revue de la Contrebasse en France". He is the recipient of the American Musical Instrument Society’s 2002 Frances Densmore Prize. His book "L'âme des orchestres: la contrebasse à Paris des origines à nos jours" is currently in preparation for the Librairie Philosophique J. Vrin.
