Lorenz Duftschmid began to study music as a child and was taught by the most renowned gamba players. Already as a student at the Schola Cantorum in Basle, Mr. Duftschmid gave countless concerts on the most important concert stages all over the world. His artistic credo is that only an individual’s personal experiences and perceptions can provide the basis for establishing oneself as an artist.

At the young age of 25 Lorenz Duftschmid was named guest professor at the University of Music in Graz and was appointed artistic director of two festivals. Lorenz Duftschmid plays ancient music on the superb instrument of Gasparo da Salo (ca. 1580), Jakobus Stainer (Absam-Tirol, 1679), Nicolas Bertrand (Paris,1699) and Antony Stephan Posch (Vienna, 1717).

As a soloist, ensemble leader and conductor, Mr. Duftschmid masters performance by combining music, musicological research, fascination, original sound, and cultural concerns of our times. Furthermore, he greatly impacts though his understanding of the needs of the audience, “as a nice performance of beautiful music is not enough. It is the sound in between the lines which results in a musical interpretation of the highest level; one must travel through these sounds to the soul of art so that the open ear can lead the heart to new resonations of the spirit.“ (Lorenz Duftschmid)
